Car AC Evaporator Service

Many times car owners can’t determine what the issue is with their AC, which is perfectly understandable. There is a lot going on with these systems. To know if the AC evaporator is the problem or something else, requires a thorough inspection of the system, including:

  • Visual Inspection: Checking for signs of damage, corrosion, or leaks on the evaporator coils and other components.
  • Pressure Testing: Using a pressure gauge to check for refrigerant leaks or blockages in the system, ensuring the system is functioning correctly.
  • Temperature Testing: We use an infrared thermometer to check the temperature of the air coming out of the vents, which can help identify cooling issues.
  • Leak Detection: We use a leak detection kit to identify refrigerant leaks, ensuring that any leaks are found and repaired.
  • System Performance Testing: Before wrapping up, we'll ensure the air conditioning system performance to ensure it's operating at its best.

The Role of the AC Evaporator in Your Vehicle's AC System

Located inside the vehicle’s cabin, the evaporator is a crucial component of the car's AC system. It is responsible for absorbing heat from the air circulating through the AC system.

As warm air from the cabin passes over the evaporator coils, the refrigerant within the coils evaporates from a liquid to a gas, effectively removing heat and lowering the air temperature before it is blown back into the interior.

This process results in the circulation of cold air back into the cabin, maintaining comfort during hot weather. The evaporator not only cools the air but also dehumidifies it, reducing moisture levels and preventing condensation on windows.

Signs of a Problem with Your Vehicle AC System

  • Reduced Cooling Efficiency: The air conditioning system may not cool the air effectively, leading to warm air blowing from the vents.
  • Unpleasant Odors: A musty or moldy smell can indicate mold or mildew growth on the evaporator coils, which can be both unpleasant and unhealthy.
  • Fogging on Windows: A leaking evaporator can cause increased humidity inside the cabin, leading to fogging on the windows and reduced visibility.
  • Frequent AC Compressor Cycling: The compressor may turn on and off frequently due to low refrigerant levels caused by a leak in the evaporator, indicating a problem with the system.
  • Visible Leaks: Refrigerant leaks can be seen as an oily residue or a sweet, chemical smell.

Customer Reviews

"I had an excellent experience at Southwest Auto. It’s been very hard to find a mechanic to work on my old Saab, so I found Jon. He did a thorough diagnostic, emailed me the results, and had me approve the work. It took some time to source parts, but Jon Came through. My car not only made the 200+ mile ride home, it’s running great. Very thankful his shop was recommended."

David Dalrymple

"I highly recommend Southwest auto for your vehicle repair. Recently, they handled my transmission leak on a 3500 Mercedes Diesel Sprinter Van/Camper. They were efficient, fairly priced, and Cory at the front desk was very communicative during the repair process. They handled the warrantee coverage for me and got me back on the road quickly. I cannot say enough how pleased I was with the service they provided."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can the AC evaporator be repaired in your vehicle?

Good news! The AC evaporator coil can be repaired in many cases, but it depends on the extent of the damage. Signs of an evaporator leak, reduced cooling, and unpleasant odors can also point to other AC-related issues. We won’t know what the exact problem is until we inspect it.

  • How do I know if my car AC evaporator is bad?

Unfortunately, many of the signs of a bad evaporator are the same signs as other AC components like the compressor, or condenser: unusual smells, reduced cooling, or streaks of moisture inside the car.

  • How long does it take to replace an AC evaporator?

Replacing the evaporator can take anywhere between 3-8 hours depending on make and model of vehicle.

  • Can I drive my car without fixing the AC evaporator?

While you can drive your car without fixing the AC evaporator, it may damage other AC components and will certainly affect passenger comfort.
