Southwest Auto's AC Recharge Service

Your AC system loses refrigerant because of minute leaks. This leads to reduced cooling performance in your vehicle. A recharge restores the optimal level of R134a refrigerant to your vehicle. Here are the steps involved for this service:

  • Read duty cycle and pressures of compressor for variable displacement systems.
  • Recover and weigh existing refrigerant in the system.
  • Vacuum test system for 30 minutes.
  • Add ultraviolet dye and any additional refrigerant required.
  • Test for leaks with ultraviolet light and assess performance of the AC system.

Signs of a Problem with Your Vehicle HVAC System

  • Reduced Cooling Efficiency: The air conditioning system may not cool the air effectively, leading to warm air blowing from the vents.
  • Unpleasant Odors: A musty or moldy smell can indicate mold or mildew growth on the evaporator coils, which can be both unpleasant and unhealthy.
  • Fogging on Windows: A leaking heater core can cause increased humidity inside the cabin, leading to fogging on the windows and reduced visibility. An unpleasant “sweet” odor can be a sign of this issue.
  • Frequent AC Compressor Cycling: The compressor may turn on and off frequently due to low refrigerant levels caused by a leak, indicating a problem with the system.
  • Visible Leaks: Refrigerant leaks can be seen as an oily residue or green stain using ultraviolet light.

Customer Reviews

"I had an excellent experience at Southwest Auto. It’s been very hard to find a mechanic to work on my old Saab, so I found Jon. He did a thorough diagnostic, emailed me the results, and had me approve the work. It took some time to source parts, but Jon Came through. My car not only made the 200+ mile ride home, it’s running great. Very thankful his shop was recommended."

"I highly recommend Southwest auto for your vehicle repair. Recently, they handled my transmission leak on a 3500 Mercedes Diesel Sprinter Van/Camper. They were efficient, fairly priced, and Cory at the front desk was very communicative during the repair process. They handled the warrantee coverage for me and got me back on the road quickly. I cannot say enough how pleased I was with the service they provided."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often should your vehicle's AC be recharged?

Most manufacturers recommend recharging your car's air conditioning (AC) system every one to two years. This schedule maintains optimal performance but sometimes you may need it sooner. It is not unusual to need ½ pound additional refrigerant every year on older vehicles.

If you notice low refrigerant, warm air blowing from the vents, or a significant decrease in cooling effectiveness, you may need to recharge it sooner.

  • Is R12 Freon still available?

No, R12 Freon is no longer produced. It has been replaced by R134a, a more efficient refrigerant. However, this does not mean that you can just add R12 refrigerant to any vehicle.

If your vehicle was manufactured before 1994 and you can't locate R12 Freon, you'll need to retrofit your air conditioning system to comply with the new standard.

  • Can your vehicle lose Freon without a leak?

Over time, refrigerants can gradually seep through the materials of the hoses and seals in the air conditioning system. Although this occurs slowly, it can result in lower refrigerant levels without any obvious indications of leakage from the AC system.
