Difference Between A Certified Pre-Owned And A Used Mercedes-Benz

Jon Howes • May 11, 2016

If you’re like most people, you would love to drive one of the most coveted luxury vehicles on the roads: a Mercedes-Benz. Unfortunately, luxury comes at a steep price, and many people simply cannot afford to buy a brand new Mercedes. If you dream of driving a Mercedes or a BMW, Audi, or other high-end luxury vehicle, you may be able to realize your dream. Here’s how to own a Mercedes-Benz or BMW that’s affordable: Set your sights on pre-owned cars rather than new cars. Just be aware “used” and “certified pre-owned” are not the same thing!

Used Versus Certified Pre-Owned. What Are the Main Differences?

Every vehicle manufacturer has different criteria dictating what “certified pre-owned” means. In the case of Mercedes-Benz, for a vehicle to be considered for certified pre-owned status, its odometer reading must be less than 75,000 miles, it must be six or fewer model years old and it must have been originally sold through a Mercedes-Benz USA dealer. Additionally, to make sure there are no red flags concerning past repair work performed on a vehicle, Mercedes analyzes cars’ Vehicle Master Inquiries (VMIs). The VMI details any work performed on a car while it was covered by factory warranty. If the report lists anything questionable, a car is not eligible to receive certified pre-owned status. Arguably, the most important  difference between a certified pre-owned and a used Mercedes-Benz  is when you purchase a certified pre-owned Mercedes, you will have the peace of mind of knowing your car has passed a rigorous 165-point inspection and reconditioning protocol.

Other Benefits Of Certified Pre-Owned Luxury Cars

In addition to knowing a certified pre-owned car has been thoroughly inspected and reconditioned, you’ll also enjoy perks that vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Mercedes-Benz, for example, provides an outstanding certified pre-owned unlimited mileage warranty for the first year you own your certified pre-owned Mercedes. After that, you’ll have the opportunity to pay to extend that warranty for up to two more years. For certified pre-owned vehicles, Mercedes also offers a window (seven days or 500-miles, whichever occurs first) during which you can exchange your Mercedes. Buying a certified pre-owned vehicle eliminates one of the main problems with purchasing used cars that are not certified pre-owned. When you buy a used car that’s not certified pre-owned, once you drive off the lot, you’re on your own if something goes wrong or you discover you aren’t happy with the car you purchased.
